June Newsletter

Dear Community Volunteers, members and supporters

June has been an exciting and transformative month for Community Enterprise PL12. We have celebrated our dedicated volunteers, relaunched a vital program, and participated in some fantastic local events. Here are the highlights:

Volunteers Week Celebration

Volunteers Week gave us the perfect opportunity to highlight our amazing volunteers. This national celebration raises awareness of the importance of volunteers in the community. With over 120 dedicated individuals across our enterprises, we are incredibly fortunate to have such a hardworking team. A special shoutout goes to our latest award winner, Leyland, who volunteers in the Kitchen and won the Young Employee Award at the Plymouth Youth Awards in June. Thank you to all our volunteers for your unwavering dedication and hard work.

Saltash Memory Box: A New Name, A Broader Mission

One of the biggest events in June was the relaunch and renaming of Dementia Voice to Memory Box. Community Enterprise PL12 is delighted to announce this rebranding, reflecting our commitment to supporting the wider community affected by mild cognitive impairments.

The relaunch event took place at Wesley Methodist Church in Saltash during a special "Do You Mind If I Sing" session. The joyous occasion featured a performance by the group, followed by a lunch provided by the Community Kitchen. This event showcased the strong community support and the essential services we offer.

"Memory Box is a Saltash-based organisation dedicated to supporting and engaging individuals with mild to moderate cognitive impairments, particularly dementia," said Marketing Director Melanie Cowie Smith. Our amazing team of dedicated volunteers, led by Rose Edwards and Carol Emmett, and supported by Pauline Newman, is integral to all our activities. Theresa Stevens, our Facilitator, also does an amazing job helping to run singing the group.

The name change reflects a more inclusive approach, recognising that many people in the community face cognitive challenges beyond dementia. The event underscored the strong local support for these vital services and the sense of companionship they foster. Special guests included Mayor of Saltash Cllr Julia Peggs and her consort husband Geoff Peggs, along with our volunteers, Directors, and the Memory Box Team. We look forward to more events like this in the future.

Music by the River: Saltash Songs & Shanties Festival

Our wonderful Memory Box choir participated in the Music by the River event, part of the Saltash Songs & Shanties Festival. Performing at Ashtorre Rock, the choir did an amazing job, attracting so many people that there was no more room inside! It was a wonderful afternoon celebrating music-making in Saltash. Thank you to everyone who supported our choir and made this event a success.

Bereavement Support Survey: Volunteers Invited to Participate

We have been contacted by Volunteer Cornwall, Community Makers in regard to a new survey led by Cornwall Council to understand and shape their services for local residents.

They are seeking to understand the need for a commissioned bereavement service for adults in Cornwall and Isles of Scilly. The experience of bereavement affects everyone, and while many can manage with the support of friends and family, some face challenges in accessing formal support. Their aim is to identify and tackle the inequalities in the support people receive around bereavement and to explore developing a service that meets the needs of bereaved adults in our region.

By completing this survey, you will help shape services for our residents. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts.  You can find the bereavement survey here. https://letstalk.cornwall.gov.uk/bereavement-support  If you’ve not used this platform before, you’ll need to create an account. The survey is live until 26 July 2024.

As June wraps up, we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in our events and supported our initiatives. Your involvement makes our community vibrant and strong. We look forward to more exciting activities and achievements in the coming months.

Once again, thank you to each and every one of you for your unwavering support and commitment to Community Enterprises PL12. Together, we are making a real difference in our community, and we look forward to many more successes in the future.

Warm regards,

Jo Grail
